CANCELLING 2 AMEX SPG CARDS, PERSONAL AND BUSINESS AND THEIR RETENTION OFFERS

In March 2017, we took advantage of one of the higher SPG credit card offers out there at 35k bonus points after meeting the minimum spend ($3k in 3 months, and an additional $3k in 6 months). My wife and I were each able to get the regular and business versions of the card. They each have a $95 annual fee after the first year, and the fees finally showed up on my personal card, and my wife’s business card.

So I called first to see what type of retention offer I could get. After about a 10 minute wait on hold, I got through to a friendly customer service rep.   She immediately offered 7k SPG points for not cancelling. I asked for more and she wouldn’t budge. I wanted to make sure I didn’t leave anything on the table since I have more cards.  Eventually I confirmed the cancellation of the card.  7K SPG points is actually pretty good for a $95 annual fee. However I had 4 of these cards so didn’t need to keep all of them.

I expected to get the same offer on my wife’s business card. We called together and got a live representative after 4 rings. On the business card the person didn’t even offer a retention bonus and just cancelled the card right away. Probably less than 2 minutes on the call total.

A lil bummed I didn’t get some amazing retention offers, but happy I got $190 in my bank account still. I still have my business card, and my wife’s personal card who are on a different billing cycle. So I will be calling in next month for those and will probably hold on to the personal card still if they offer 7k points.

I love to travel, I love to get a good deal, and I love to negotiate. Of course after God, family, and friends, or even better when its with them.
